We always assume that we want what we’ve seen: the sun, the glittery mountain landscape, the vision. And then, on the day of, what we all really want is just each other, and the day as it is, and life as we are: the soft mountains covered in mist from recent rain, and our love finally ours, in our arms.

And me? I’m just so glad I get to learn, over and over again, to show up to you and discover with you that the image I want to make is the one with you in it. And that’s all.

I really, really love shooting at Delfosse Vineyards and Winery — it’s just a magical place. It looks like the mediterranean in the midst of the Virginia Mountains. It just has a very special feel. And just a short drive from Charlottesville! Kristin and Brian chose it for their destination wedding because of the amazing views. When the day came, and it was rainy, we all still held out hope that the ceremony could be had on the crest of the hill, with the view that they imagined. But then it started raining hard just as the ceremony was to start, and the whole ceremony was moved to the porch of the sweet cabin nearby.

The magical thing about adjusting to weather on your wedding day is that it immediately puts your heart in the right place — along for the ride, taking the adventure. It drops you into the spirit of adventure and unfolding and discovering and meeting, rather than managing and directing. And that is exactly the place you want to be coming from. It’s a wonderful way to meet the words of your ceremony, your marriage, and meet what’s most true in your hearts. I loved watching Kristin and Brian meet the moment so very beautifully, and have a wonderful wonderful wedding, and I absolutely loved taking them up into the high hills of the vineyard, and seeing the place in its softness, with a misty magic that breathed intimacy and goodness surrounding them as they took a moment together to really feel the impact of what they had just done. What a pleasure. And quite a couple.

I have said this before, but it is really special to me that I get to share in your memories too. Each of you impact me, and I treasure that I was with you on some of the most quiet moments of your wedding day, and that I get to see you and support you as you take the brave steps onto the beginning of your journey. Kristin and Brian, your partnership is full of such sweet and celebrational devotion to each other. Thanks for having me, and I hold you in my heart as you go forward.

Get ready for the most thrilling combination of elegance and authentic guffaw-worthy joy. Alex and Noah, getting married for the THIRD time (third ceremony, together the whole time), much to the delight of everyone who knows them. Guests from as far as Africa, reflecting the large amount of travel they have done, and a family who treasures them immensely. Laughs and joy as big as the sun, with a decorum and elegance that suits them just as well as their laughter and joy. Such attention to detail, such relaxation, such a PARTY. Take a look at my favorites below.

Wedding Planner and Florals: Amore Events. I love working with Cody and recommend her highly! She has an impeccable eye for design and is unflappable under pressure. Her florals are always beautiful.

Venue: Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards. Pippin Hill has some of the best indoor light of any venue out there — I LOVE shooting in their bridal suite — as well as of course that fabulous view of the mountains. In addition, they know how to take care of a wedding party almost effortlessly! Perfection.

Alice and Michael are from New Orleans, and although they wanted to return to Charlottesville for their wedding and take advantage of the stately beauty of James Monroe’s Ash Lawn Highland home, they brought New Orleans with them. Color, celebration, decoration, brass music, and gorgeous, gorgeous love ran the day.

Just two days before the wedding, they let me know that they’d been able to find a band who could do a Second Line Parade, a New Orleans wedding tradition where the bride and groom and all guests take to the streets, marching behind a big brass band and waving flags and carrying on after midnight. The Band, called the No BS Brass Band, hailed from Richmond, Virginia, and leaped at the chance to do a Second Line. And it was truly wonderful! Everyone got on the bus from Ash Lawn-Highland and went to the Charlottesville Downtown Mall around midnight, and we marched almost the entire length!

Below are my five favorites from their day — so hard to choose. And Alice and Michael’s wedding was published on Borrowed and Blue today, so go take a look to see more images than just the five below: https://www.borrowedandblue.com/us/weddings/alice-michael

Leila and Austin’s wedding was the kind I would aspire to — small, intimate, authentic, fun, and full of heart and connection and real, deep love. It was such an honor to shoot it for them, and capture just a smidge of what was there that day. Their wedding was small — just 40 people, and in their favorite place — the backyard dock of Leila’s parent’s house at Lake Monticello near Charlottesville, Virginia. Leila arrived in a boat with her dad, much to Austin’s surprise. There were tears and laughter and speeches and some DOWN dancing. And such profound enjoyment and relaxation.

I feel lucky to get to be your eyes at these most important events, because then these memories become my own, too. Your stories become part of my fabric of what love is, what it can be, and how human connection works. Thanks, Leila and Austin and everyone, for making me part of your lives.

Big love for the boy who first made me a mama. Wow, what a ride! Big love, big gratitude, big sky, big field, big heart.

Every year, King Family Vineyards in Crozet, Virginia plants a sunflower field. It’s a wonderful location in general for kids to run around while adults relax and socialize — big fields, mountains, wine, food, great people, live music — but the sunflower field makes it even more perfect.

I can’t wait for the couple who books me for a summer wedding while the sunflowers are blooming…could that be you?
